My artwork is an abstract representation of a wave, this wave represents beauty and serenity within abstract art forms and unrealistic tranquility. I have decided to name this artwork tūātea which is the New Zealand word for waves, this fits my artwork well as it is a wave and it’s inspired by New Zealand art forms. The elements you can see in my work are the wavy like shapes and smooth/curvy edges, this gives the viewer a sense of calming and also feels like they are seeing something even more beautiful.

The art form media my artwork is made out of is, clay, the tools I used to create the shape for this was a knife that is used to cut clay, sandpaper, a tooth pick and a rolling pin, all of these things were used to help create the shape of a wave and to help smooth out the wave so it didn’t look as rough. My artwork has a personal connection rather than a social connection, it shows what I like and what I think is beautiful, the inspiration I had behind this artwork was my New Zealand culture and the beauty of the ocean. I tried to show a sense of a calming nature when making this and also tried to show heritage.

My artist goals are to try capture an audience through a piece, I try to do this by making emotion in a small sculpture and connect this with many other people that also like calming places. By creating this artwork I felt that I learnt a lot more about clay and sculpting, although I hoped for a smoother finishing piece but that’s okay. This will influence many of my future artworks as I will try more clay sculpting and try for many other cool shapes and curves.
