The purpose of this practical was to explore how artists use symbolism to express their personal highs and lows of life. The idea for this visual study was inspired by my interest in symbolism and how everyday objects can hold a much deeper meaning behind them, as well as the documentation of the journey through life.

Exploring artists such as Frida Kahlo who is known for her use of symbolism to portray certain aspects of her life in a more visually appealing and subtle ways. In her work ‘Self Portrait with Thorns’ The black monkeys are a symbol of addiction while the hummingbird around her neck is a symbol of hope and healing this easily overlooked details tell a story of her struggle with addiction and how she is healing from her past. While artist Nadia Waheed used colours as her symbolism rather than objects, her use of colours to portray emotion was my inspiration for my final artwork.

For my final artwork â€˜Journey Through Colour’ I included women of all nationalities, sizes, and ages, as I wanted this artwork to be relatable to more than one audience. The meaning behind my artwork is that through the journey of life you can be faced with a range of emotions, some may be good and some may be bad but they still help you become the person you are meant to be.
